Not another post about Photographer’s Block

Stop me if you’ve heard this one.

Actually don’t, because I already know you have.

Remember that post from a few weeks ago where I said that I was changing up my Mostly Wordless Wednesday posts? The one where I said that I would only be showing recent work from now on? Notice that there hasn’t been a Mostly Wordless Wednesday post for the last two Weeks? And there probably won’t be one this Wednesday either.

Today was a beautiful day, so I thought about going out during the golden hour tonight, probably around the Rideau Falls area downtown. What did I do instead? Well I spent part of the afternoon in Quitter’s Coffee drinking Harvey & Vern’s Olde Fashioned Lime Soda. Then I walked home and fell asleep on the couch. By the time I woke up, it was past dinner time so I made the Chicken Tikka Masala I wanted to try (my first attempt at cooking Indian food and it was a big success!), and now it’s too late to get to Rideau Falls for golden hour or even blue hour.

So I’m writing a blog post instead. Then I’m going to watch a movie.

I’ve been finding it so hard to get motivated to shoot when I’m not traveling. Ottawa, my home town, is a beautiful city, but it is also a tourist destination meaning everything has been photographed countless times by countless photographers, many of whom are far more talented and creative than I am. Living in such a photographed place ups the game, makes it more challenging to come up with my own personal views. I’m too heavily influenced by all the photos I’ve already seen of the city.

When I travel I find it much easier. I may be taking similar photos as other visitors to these cities, but at least the photos are new to me.

The weather tomorrow is calling for thunderstorms on-and-off all day, so I’m likely to be house bound all day. Maybe it will be a good day to rip apart and declutter my home office, something that is long overdue. Then it’s back to work on Monday with no new photos to post on Wednesday.

Next weekend I have nothing on my schedule, so I think I’m going to turn it into a staycation. I’m going to play tourist in my own city for those two days. I’m going to take photos of popular tourist spots, not caring if my photos are unique or not. Maybe I’ll try to get back to some more street photography, which I haven’t done for a while.

Of course I say this now. Only time will tell if it will actually happen. Or if I fall asleep on the couch again.
